Caring for Your Smile Between Dental Visits

Patient Education

September 3, 2026

Your daily habits play an important role in maintaining a healthy smile between dental visits. Explore simple ways to protect your teeth and gums and make the most of your professional dental care.

Build a Routine That Actually Works

Brushing twice a day and flossing once a day are the foundation of a healthy smile, but the details matter. Brush for a full two minutes with a soft-bristled brush, angling the bristles toward your gumline to clear away plaque before it hardens into tartar. If you tend to rush, try setting a timer or brushing along with a song.

Flossing reaches the spaces a toothbrush can't, so don't skip it even on busy days. If traditional floss feels awkward, floss picks or a water flosser can make the habit easier to stick with.

Watch for Changes Worth Mentioning

Between visits, pay attention to how your mouth feels. Bleeding gums, new sensitivity to hot or cold, a tooth that suddenly feels different when you bite down, or a sore that doesn't heal within a week or two are all worth a call to our office. Catching small changes early usually means a simpler, more comfortable fix.

It's also worth rethinking snacking habits — frequent sipping on sugary or acidic drinks throughout the day gives bacteria more opportunities to produce the acid that wears down enamel, even more than eating the same amount in one sitting.

Make the Most of Your Professional Care

Regular cleanings and exams do more than polish your teeth — they let your dental team catch small issues before they become bigger, more expensive problems. Come prepared with questions about anything you've noticed, and be upfront about changes to your health history or medications, since those can affect your oral health too.

A healthy smile is really built day by day, at home, between visits. Small, consistent habits go a long way toward making your next appointment an easy one.

We're proud to provide care that makes a lasting impact, and our patients' experiences reflect that commitment. Hear from the families who trust Peak Dentistry with their smiles.

I don’t normally take the time to write reviews, but Peak Dentistry deserves recognition. My husband and I have been so fortunate to be a part of this practice for 10 years driving 2-1/2 hours each way to make our appointments. Drs. Joe and Gabrielle Ramellini, as well as their staff, have provided a level of dental care that reflects their expertise in the work they do that sets them apart as very unique and special. We highly recommend Peak Dentistry to anyone who is interested in quality care you can trust with a personal touch.

New patient visit. Office was beautiful, the treatment was 1st rate in every sense, and I was so impressed with all the latest technology.

The entire staff at Peak Dentistry is amazing, but I would like to highlight my hygienist, Missy, in particular. I went in for a regular teeth cleaning and didn't necessarily expect to be "wowed" but Missy took such care and attention to detail that I walked out of there with the pearliest whites I have ever had. Thank you for giving me such a beautiful white smile, Missy!
