Restorative dentistry

Restored in aSingle Visit

A damaged tooth can make eating uncomfortable, and finding time for multiple dental appointments isn't always easy. Same-day crowns offer a convenient way to restore a weakened or broken tooth, often in just one visit.

At Peak Dentistry in Clyde, NC, Dr. Joseph Ramellini and Dr. Gabrielle Ramellini help patients find solutions that fit their dental needs and busy schedules. Using CEREC® technology, our team can create custom dental crowns without the multiple visits traditionally needed for crown treatment.

Whether your tooth is cracked, worn, or weakened by decay, we'll help you understand your options and determine if a same-day crown is right for you.

About This Service

What Are Same-Day Dental Crowns?

A same-day dental crown is a custom-made restoration that covers the visible portion of a damaged tooth. It helps protect remaining tooth structure while restoring the tooth's natural shape, appearance, and chewing function.

Traditional crowns often require two appointments, with a temporary crown worn between visits. Same-day crowns use digital technology to streamline the process, allowing eligible patients to receive their permanent restoration in a single appointment.

At Peak Dentistry, CEREC® technology helps us design and create crowns with precision while reducing the need for repeat visits.

When Do You Need a Dental Crown?

Not every damaged tooth needs a crown. Small cavities and minor chips can often be treated with fillings or other conservative restorations. However, when a tooth has lost significant structure, a crown may provide the coverage and protection it needs.

We may recommend a dental crown for:

  • Large cavities: Extensive decay may leave too little healthy tooth structure to support a filling.
  • Cracked or fractured teeth: A crown can help protect a weakened tooth from additional damage during normal chewing.
  • Worn or broken teeth: A custom crown can restore the tooth's shape and improve its function.
  • Teeth treated with root canals: Some teeth may require additional protection after root canal therapy, particularly those subjected to heavy chewing forces.

Before recommending treatment, we examine your tooth, evaluate your bite, and assess the surrounding gums. We'll explain whether a crown or another restorative option is the best fit for your situation.

How Do CEREC Same-Day Crowns Work?

CEREC technology allows dentists to design and create custom dental restorations using digital scanning and computer-assisted design and manufacturing.

Instead of relying on traditional impression materials, a digital scanner captures detailed information about your tooth and the surrounding bite. Specialized software uses this information to help design a crown that fits your tooth's shape and function.

A milling unit then creates the restoration from a suitable dental material. Once the crown is ready, your dentist checks its fit, appearance, and bite before securing it in place.

The primary advantage is convenience. In suitable cases, the process can be completed in a single appointment without the need for a temporary crown or a separate return visit.

Technology is only part of the equation, though. Your dentist's evaluation helps determine the appropriate crown design, material, and treatment approach for your individual tooth.

What to Expect During Your Same-Day Crown Appointment

Knowing what happens during treatment can make your appointment feel more manageable. While every patient's needs are different, same-day crown treatment generally follows a few key steps.

1. Examining your tooth

We begin by discussing your symptoms and examining the damaged tooth. Dental X-rays may be needed to evaluate the tooth's roots and surrounding structures. We'll explain our findings and review the recommended treatment.

2. Preparing the tooth

After numbing the area, we remove any decay and prepare the tooth to accommodate its new crown. We focus on preserving healthy tooth structure while creating the space needed for a secure restoration.

3. Capturing a digital impression

A digital scan records the prepared tooth and surrounding teeth. This information helps guide the design of your custom crown.

4. Creating your crown

CEREC technology helps design and mill your restoration. The crown is shaped to work with your natural bite and neighboring teeth.

5. Checking the fit and placing the crown

Before securing the crown, we evaluate its fit, contacts, and bite. We make adjustments as needed and provide instructions for caring for your restoration.

Although the process takes place during a single visit for eligible patients, you'll still need to allow time for tooth preparation, crown fabrication, and careful fitting.

Are Same-Day Crowns Right for Everyone?

Same-day crowns are convenient, but they aren't the best solution for every tooth.

Certain conditions may require additional treatment or a different restorative approach. These include deep fractures, significant tooth damage, active infections, or situations that require a specialized restoration.

In some cases, a crown made by a dental laboratory may be more appropriate. A severely damaged tooth may also need treatment beyond a crown.

At Peak Dentistry, we consider the condition of your tooth, your bite, and your long-term oral health before recommending an approach.

If you have an upcoming trip, a demanding work schedule, or another scheduling concern, let us know. We'll help you understand the available options and what your treatment may involve.

How Long Do Same-Day Crowns Last?

Same-day crowns can provide durable, long-lasting restorations when properly selected, placed, and maintained.

However, no dental crown lasts forever. Its lifespan depends on several factors, including the material used, the health of the underlying tooth, chewing forces, and daily oral hygiene habits.

A crown also doesn't prevent decay from developing around its edges. Protecting the surrounding teeth and gums remains important after treatment.

To help maintain your dental crown:

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, paying attention to the gumline.
  • Floss or clean between your teeth daily, including around the crown.
  • Avoid chewing ice or using your teeth to open packages.
  • Attend regular dental checkups so we can monitor your restoration and oral health.
  • Ask about a protective nightguard if you regularly clench or grind your teeth.

You may experience temporary sensitivity or tenderness after your appointment. Contact our office if discomfort worsens, your bite feels uneven, or you notice a problem with the crown.

Frequently Asked Questions About Same-Day Crowns

Can you really get a dental crown in one day?

Yes. With CEREC technology, eligible patients can have a custom crown designed, created, and placed during a single appointment. Your dentist will first determine whether this approach is appropriate for your tooth.

How long does a same-day crown appointment take?

Appointment length depends on your tooth condition and the treatment required. The visit includes preparation, digital scanning, crown creation, and placement. Our team can discuss scheduling expectations as part of planning your treatment.

Are same-day crowns as durable as traditional crowns?

Same-day crowns can be a durable option for restoring damaged teeth. Their longevity depends on the restoration material, the condition of the tooth, bite forces, and ongoing care. Your dentist will explain which type of crown is best suited to your needs.

New patient visit. Office was beautiful, the treatment was 1st rate in every sense, and I was so impressed with all the latest technology.

The entire staff at Peak Dentistry is amazing, but I would like to highlight my hygienist, Missy, in particular. I went in for a regular teeth cleaning and didn't necessarily expect to be "wowed" but Missy took such care and attention to detail that I walked out of there with the pearliest whites I have ever had. Thank you for giving me such a beautiful white smile, Missy!
