What Are the Symptoms of Oral Cancer?
Oral cancer can appear in places like your cheek lining, on your gums, on your lips, on and under your tongue, and on the roof of your mouth. Here are the main symptoms to check for:
- Red or white patches anywhere in your mouth
- Numbness, tenderness, or pain in your mouth or on your lips
- A rash or sore that doesn’t heal after two weeks or keeps returning
- Lumps or rough spots in your mouth
- A change in your bite
- Difficulty swallowing, speaking, or chewing
- Difficulty moving your tongue or jaw
- A sore throat

Oral cancer screenings are part of a routine dental exam. We’ll check your lips, cheek lining, gums, tongue, the roof of your mouth, and the floor of your mouth. We’ll also examine your throat, neck, and jaw. Screenings are painless and don’t require any special preparation. If we find something concerning, we may recommend tests or a follow-up appointment to see if the issue is still there.
