When it comes to your oral care, it may seem like your teeth and gums steal the show. But your tongue is important too! We’re here to reinforce the importance of your tongue’s health and function with some fun facts about your tongue.

Long in the Tongue

While your tongue sits comfortably in your mouth, it may be a lot longer than you realize. The average tongue is actually three inches in length. The longest tongue on record? Nearly 4 inches long!

Counting Taste Buds

Your taste buds are those precious receptors on your tongue that help you enjoy all of the delicious foods that you adore. Most of us have somewhere between 2,000 and 4,000 taste buds. Some individuals are even considered super tasters, and can experience heightened flavor. And if you think you can count your taste buds, think again. Those bumps on your tongue are actually called papillae, and each contains about 6 taste buds within its tissue.

Your Tongue Print Is Unique

How about unlocking your phone with your tongue print? Okay, we’re kidding, but it is true that your tongue print is as unique as your fingerprint! While it’s not currently an ideal way to verify someone’s identity, that could change in the future.

A Direct Link to Your Health

Finally, your tongue can actually tell us a lot about your health. Issues like discoloration, spots, coating, and pain can all be indications that something is going on with your oral health, or even elsewhere in the body. If you notice anything unusual happening on your tongue, give us a call to get it checked out.
