When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Our permanent teeth are meant to stay with us for a lifetime. Thanks to a whole range of issues, from genetics to sugary, starchy diets, increased life spans to accidents, it just isn’t in the cards for everyone. In this post we will cover the common reasons why a tooth extraction may have to happen.

Decay

We have all been warned about cavities, and, in fact, many of us have had at least one. Most cavities are caught early and filled in a quick visit to the dentist, allowing the natural tooth to stay in place and function as usual. If the decay infiltrates and affects the tooth, a root canal procedure can usually do the trick. However, sometimes the damage is too deep and the infection is too extensive, and the tooth can’t be saved. In such instances the tooth will need to be pulled.

Periodontal Disease

When gum disease advances past the initial, more treatable phase, known as gingivitis, it becomes known as periodontitis. In this phase, the gums begin to pull away from the teeth, creating space for dangerous bacteria to accumulate and cause infection. Periodontitis creates a very real threat to the health of the teeth, and often initiates a need for extraction.

A Cure for Crowding

Everyone’s mouth is built differently. In some instances, the jaw is not big enough to hold all of the teeth comfortably, resulting in unpleasant crowding. An overcrowded mouth often means a crooked smile. In order for the dentist or orthodontist to straighten the smile, he or she will likely need to make room by performing one or more tooth extractions.

Accident

In the case of an accident, an extraction is often needed. Most times a tooth that is chipped or broken can, at least in part, be fixed and saved. However, if the tooth is dislodged or the damage is extensive, extraction may be the best option.
