How to Keep Your Gums Healthy in 2020

Artistic rendering of the 4 stages of periodontal disease

As you work toward a healthier smile in 2020, you should think of your gums as the foundation. A strong, solid foundation can easily support the smile of your dreams, but a weak or shaky foundation can lead to all sorts of problems. But don’t worry — our team is here to help! Our office philosophy focuses on total body health so we don’t just treat symptoms. We want to keep you healthy before problems occur. Regular preventive care can reduce or eliminate your risk for developing gum disease and preserve the health of your gums.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, occurs when your gums become infected. It’s caused by plaque, a sticky biofilm that is made up of bacteria. According to the American Dental Association, half of adults over 30 suffer from some form of gum disease. You can see the stages from the image above as healthy gums progress to gingivitis and finally periodontitis.

How Can I Keep From Developing Gum Disease?

Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults. However, there’s some good news: good oral hygiene can protect you. If you brush your teeth twice daily for two minutes each time, floss each day, and regularly visit our office for cleaning and exams, you’ll be well on your way toward healthy gums. A healthy diet rich in vegetables and fiber and low in sugar will also help maintain gum health.

What Are Warning Signs of Gum Disease?

Even if you do develop gum disease, early detection can limit or even reverse its effects. Some of the early warning signs of gum disease include swollen or tender gums, redness or receding gums, and frequent bleeding. These symptoms occur when gums become irritated by the buildup of plaque near the gumline. However, vigorous brushing can also cause gums to become irritated and begin to recede. Be sure you’re brushing with gentle, circular motions.
