How do braces work?

Traditional braces use metal wires and brackets to shift teeth into proper alignment. Throughout treatment, the metal braces place constant pressure on your teeth. The force of the pressure helps move teeth into proper alignment. Over the course of treatment, our dentist will perform adjustments to tighten the wires, causing the teeth to shift into the next phase of alignment. Traditional braces can correct a variety of alignment issues, including overbite, underbite, crossbite, and more. If you are not sure if metal braces are right for you, ask us about our other orthodontic options!

How long do braces take?

The duration of braces will depend on factors such as the severity of misalignment, jaw growth, and adherence. Generally, patients can expect to wear braces for 12 to 24 months. Maintaining regular check-ups with our dentist helps monitor progress and adjust treatment as needed, aiming for the most efficient treatment and process. During your consultation, our dentist will go over your treatment plan, including how long you can expect to wear metal braces.

What can you not eat with traditional braces?

With traditional braces, food and plaque can often become wedged underneath and between the wires and brackets. Due to this, we advise avoiding foods like popular, chewy candies and nuts that could cause discomfort or hygiene issues. Hard foods like apples or carrots should be cut into smaller, bite-sized pieces. We encourage patients to brush or floss every time after eating to maintain the best oral health during treatment.
